As the Bay Area faces its driest February in 156 years, Guerneville residents could be forgiven if they choose not to worry about this year’s drought.

It was one year ago today that much of their town was submerged in the biggest Russian River flood in nearly a quarter century. Last year’s epic rains pushed the river 13 feet over flood stage to 45 feet. Since 1940, the Sonoma County town had flooded 38 times, but a solution to the problem would be costly, experts say.

This year, no measurable precipitation has fallen in much of the region, highlighting the dynamic weather conditions of the last few years.
